Mercedes SLK-Chrysler Crossfire
Saturn Sky-Pontiac Solstice
Fiat 124-Mazda MX-5
Toyota 86-Subaru BRZ
New BMW Z4-Toyota/Lexus Something
All I’m saying is that these types of cars come in pairs now. The only way we can get it is if another automaker goes in on it, and I’m not talking Renault. Maybe if Kia really wanted that GT4 Stinger and the Hyundai brand didn’t need the small platform...but it seems like the Korean and Japanese brands are very “last resort” when it comes to even mentioning the other brands outside of car comparisons.

I just read all the comments there, that was painful.

It will be exciting to see what Hyundai/Kia comes out with to replace the Genesis coupe though.
Maybe instead of having it be a smaller platform sharer of a sedan, they’ll have it be a dedicated short wheelbase RWD platform that can give rise to a new Hyundai sports car and Kia sports car.
Also the Toyota S-FR is coming!

So Nissan is taking up the mantle of the mass producer of the beige-mobile while the other manufactures have realized that some people want an affordable fun to drive car and you know maybe we should build one.

Can’t really blame them for that. The Miata/BRZ/FT86 are pretty much all the volume the market will give a low-powered lightweight sports car. Premium brands like Merc and BMW can make these sorts of things (SLK, Z4) Because they can jack up the price to make up for low volume, something that rubbish brands can’t really get away with.

I can get how the BRZ/GT86 were jointly developed.
But the new Miata would have happened regardless of Fiat.
BMW made the Z4 all by itself when it came out. And they had the Z3 before that.
I see the trend where car makers like to go halvsies on the development costs, but it shouldn’t be the only way to get a new cheap sports car.

No...I mean we know most manufacturers don’t build cars like this. We just thought Nissan was gonna.
Its like being teased. Like that kiss and thigh feel-up under the table was “only a concept”. So don’t tell me you don’t want it too, Nissan! :D

True, but since I think everything they build that is in my price range seems to come with a soul crushing CVT or styling that makes me want to run screaming in terror I stopped paying attention to them.

It was unlikely anyway. BRZ/86/FRS/GT86 sales haven’t been impressive, so it’s hard to see why another manufacturer would want to rush into that market.
They already have the Z - if they want something that can play in that segment slightly, they can always decontent the new one slightly to drop it’s base price by a grand or two.

If they take inspiration from the 240z for the next Z car, maybe they’ll lighten it up and end up with the lightweight sports car people claim to want.
Then everyone will bitch about it being underpowered.

If they make another Z car, that would be awesome.
People can bitch all they want. It will sell pretty well though.

Sales haven’t been impressive? But its very profitable and good for Toyota and Subaru’s brand.
Everything shouldn’t have to sell as well as a Corolla to justify production.

No, but it should at least sell well enough to earn back it’s development costs and contribute toward a successor.
It has been a good image builder for Subaru, and may work that way for Toyota (which has always needed it more) now that the Scion experiment is over, but they should figure out a way to increase mass appeal if there is to be a second generation. I guess moving it to a more popular marque and giving it a slight power bump is part of that.

I think it would more than give back the development costs. They already have a 370Z chassis to build on...
